Studio
of Rosalind Whitehouse,
Accredited Paintings Conservator - Restorer
Conservation
and restoration of European oil paintings from
1500 to the present day, offering in addition a specialist
knowledge and experience of the work of many twentieth century painters.
The best available, reversible
conservation materials are used.
Huge strides have been made in recent
decades in the design and production of good materials for conservation.
Much distortion - not to mention destruction - of
works of art has resulted in the past from the use of inappropriate
materials when conserving and restoring paintings. Materials now used have been
exhaustively tested to demonstrate that they will not darken or change colour,
or cross-link and become impossible to remove without damaging the artwork. This
is the concept of 'reversibility'. Modern varnishes will out-perform those of
the past, needing removal and replacement less often.
Purpose-designed lining adhesives do not darken
the painting to which they are applied, and do not require the high temperatures
or pressure needed in the past to secure them.
This studio strives to maintain in practice the
principle of reversibility.
