Portrait of Mary Cotton, Countess of Denbigh, and her two sons

Attrib. Sir Nathaniel Dance, (1738-1811)

Oil on canvas, 40” x 50”

Inscribed and dated 1770, recto and verso.

This painting had been accidentally damaged, and came to the studio for full cleaning, lining and restoration.

Brown grime, yellowed varnish, and repaint from the last restoration were removed.

This revealed unfaded, original paint colours at the edges of the painting, where they had been hidden from light by the frame rebate.

Detail, showing a patch of dirt and varnish, before cleaning was completed.

Unfaded red of the lady’s dress at the bottom edge

After restoration the painting was photographed, and a digital image was made, to indicate the lost colours of the composition.
